what charity gives handicapped vans to people in need. My mother had a stroke, uses a wheelchair and needs van?

Question by Judy: what charity gives handicapped vans to people in need. My mother had a stroke, uses a wheelchair and needs van?
It is getting more and more difficult to transfer my mother into the car when I take her to the Doctor. She is paralyzed on the left side and when I lift and transfer her into the car she can not see the car seat because of the stroke and it scares her then she starts to have a panic attack which makes it harder to transfer her into the car. I must have a van with a wheelchair ramp because transferring my mother in the car is a fall risk for us both . Please Help. Judy

Some one asked me this question last week and I looked on the internet and found several sites, but I didn’t get the feeling that they would give anything. Have you checked the medicare. One other way I’ve noticed with handicapped vans is the plymouth, they have are close to the ground and have a ramp up into the van. I hope you find any answer and hope someone else gives you some answers too. Its tough. God Bless

What More Do You Need To Say? Travel Wheelchairs

You’ve likely discovered that portable wheelchairs don’t have to be a limitation. The world seems a smaller place when taking a trip seems nothing more than an inconvenience combined with pure frustration. Look no further here are some ideas about ramps and lifts that you could consider and hopefully be the answers to your prayers. Being in a wheelchair doesn’t mean you have to be limited to the ground floor of your home or left behind on trips in vehicles. ‘Situation’ no longer needs to be a word used in connection with freedom of mobility when using an electric wheelchair lift. A stair lift is the most common for home use. The stair wall is the perfect place to attach a wheelchair lift allowing you mobility between the different levels. The great thing about these stair lifts is that they can be uninstalled if you no longer need the lift or wheelchair to get around. There is an array of choice when it comes to wheelchair lifts specifically when it comes to traveling by car. With the lift folding into the vehicle or simply being attached to the rear bumper mobility is no longer restrictive. If you drive your vehicle, however, there’s no reason to worry. You may wonder what if I own a van? wonder no more as specially designed lifts can be fitted for physically challenged drivers. Wheelchair ramps can also be used as an immediate solution. Modular wheelchair ramps, for example, are sturdy and generally semi-permanent. Threshold ramps are the perfect solution to small steps or entryways making for ease of movement. If you desire something other then a lift, track ramps can be used when it comes to stairwells and vehicles. Even though track ramps may be used for vehicles, there are also other types that are also meant to make traveling in vehicles easier for wheelchair users. Tri-fold wheelchair ramps are usually built into vans to allow a wheelchair access in through the side of the vehicle. The name says it all allowing the ramp to be folded both in and out. Ramps such as the hitched mounted ramp are mounted onto the actual hitch allowing ease of use when it comes to large vehicles. Mobility is vital for many and certainly accomplished in a portable wheelchair. Even still a lift or ramp maybe need in certain situations. Although the portable wheelchair has many advantages when it comes to mobility one may still find the need for a lift or a ramp to assist. Travel has never been so easy thanks to both permanent and portable ramps and lifts ensuring freedom wherever.

What help is there for disabled senior citizens who need home repairs, cleaning, security in OKC?

I have a dear friend, who is about 70-80. He has had his legs broken in a car accident (he was a pedestrian) and now walks with a cane. He is still working in his own business, although I would assume not very well, due to his mobility problems and the fact that he is often quite broke.

I used to drop by and bring him food, but unfortunately cannot do so anymore, since I have fallen on hard times myself.

His home is very unsanitary and is piled high with boxes. He himself realizes that it is a fire hazard, thank god, and uses only a bathroom heater for heat, because he is afraid the other heater would catch the house on fire.

His roof has had a major leak and he now has mold throughout the house. It is bad enough that it is making my fiance and his mother both very sick even to walk to the porch. They have asthma and allergies.

He has roaches so bad that they even crawl on you when you come in.

His kitchen is so filthy, he has trash everywhere and dishes are dirty. I’m not even sure he eats in there anymore.

He also recently told me that he had been “hit” (by thieves) three times in one week. The first night (and I was there that night, and left before he got home, as I was taking care of his cats while he was out of town), I saw a suspicious looking truck park outside his house. I waited to see if they were going to his house, and when they got out and went across the street, I left. Apparently, later that night, they stole things off his trailer.

He has been sleeping in his van since that happened, and then last night, he was going to go to the bathroom, and his cats ran off all of a sudden, at the same time he heard people. He went back, and a truck was backing quickly through the alleyway.

Tonight, they stole things from his house WHILE HE WAS THERE!!!!

I am at my wit’s end as to what can be done to protect him. Please give me some advice or referrals? I’m afraid to call DHS or someone, because I’m afraid his house will be condemned, or he will have everything taken away and be institutionalized. He isn’t senile, he is just physically disabled and unable to fix these problems, and unfortunately, I am just about the only person he can count on, and I am unable to fix this enormous of a problem.

I think he should be in a “Independent Living” type situation, where there is someone to check on him, but not watch his every move, and where he can come and go freely, as long as someone knows where he is for extended absences. Someplace where he can keep his cats, but has to downsize his “THINGS”, which are proving to be very dangerous for him!!! He does still work, which requires travel, but he is unable to clean his house, fix the problems with it, or protect himself.

Need a ADA Attorney?

I can not get into the shopping center from the bus stop without getting off the sidewalk and driving up hill in traffic and back down hill to get back to the bus stop after shopping. And with a cart it gets a little dangerous. I am afraid of what would happen if the cart got away from me and went out into the intersection. I have spoken with the property owners I have sent them letters stating about the safety but they will do nothing. I spoke to the City about it they looked into it and the property owners told the city that there was a lot more wrong then just the entrance and were getting an engineer to look at into it. That was in 2004 the City will not push them to fix it stating if they try to push them they might put the breaks on. I have said the breaks are on.
I do not want to sue for any money just to make it safe.
This is the closest store to my home. I have tried the lawyer referral services but so far the kind of lawyer I have been in contact with wants me to sue others like a car dealer just so he has more then one case to file on to make money. I am not like that. I just want it to be safe and if we have a law that states they are not up to code. They should fix it. But all I get is a run around with who’s job it is to enforce the law. I have contacted the City the County and the office of the DOJ
I do understand why some people get fed up and start suing everyone that has a code violation after all this I have been going through. There are over 23,000 service men and woman coming home Disabled from this war fighting for Iraq’s Freedom only to come back home to find that they have lost a lot of rights and freedom here at home. This Country has made it a lot easier for the disabled more then any other Country but if we have laws that we do not enforce what good are they.
I live on the Central coast of Calif. with a park right down town that the city let’s a Farmers Market to happen but with parking on three sides of the park and in front of all the shops around the park but not one handicap parking space. Again I have tried to get the city to put in some but I have not had any success. This City will not do anything for the Handicap.
All I am looking for now is an ADA Attorney.
If there was a way to let people feel how it is to have to drive around a parking lot for ten minute just waiting for a handicap parking space to open up out of the two hundred parking space’s there are only five for the handicap and out of them only two for a van
Any Help please Not wanting to upset people just want it to be safe.
